The power steering pump is a key component of the power steering system in vehicles, including tractors. Its main function is to make it easier to turn the steering wheel by providing hydraulic pressure to the steering system. This makes it easier for the driver to maneuver the vehicle, especially at low speeds and during heavy work.
Main components of the power steering pump:
- Housing - the pump is enclosed in a housing that protects its internal components against contamination and damage.
- Impeller - a rotating element inside the pump that is driven by a V-belt connected to the vehicle's engine.
- Vanes or pistons - depending on the type of pump (vane, piston), these elements convert the rotational movement of the impeller into hydraulic pressure.
- Regulating valve - controls the pressure and flow of hydraulic fluid, ensuring proper operation of the power steering system.
- Fluid Reservoir - The location where the hydraulic fluid used by the power steering system is stored.
How does the power steering pump work?
- Pump drive - the power steering pump is driven by a V-belt that is connected to the engine crankshaft. When the engine is running, the belt drives the pump impeller.
- Creating Pressure - The rotating impeller causes the vanes or pistons inside the pump to move, creating hydraulic pressure.
- Pressure Delivery - The generated hydraulic pressure is transmitted through lines to the power steering system (steering gear or actuator).
- Power Steering - Hydraulic pressure assists the movement of the steering racks, making it easier for the driver to turn the steering wheel.
