Steering rods

The tie rod is an important part of a vehicle's steering system, transmitting motion from the steering gear (steering mechanism) to the wheel knuckles, allowing the vehicle to be steered. Steering racks are crucial for precise and safe vehicle control.

Main components of the tie rod:

  • Tie rods (steering crossbar) - these elements connect the steering gear directly to the wheel knuckles. Vehicles with traditional steering may use two tie rods (one for each side).
  • Steering rod ends - these are the articulating elements located at the ends of the steering rods, which connect the rods with the steering knuckles. They allow a certain range of motion, which is necessary for suspension operation and wheel turning.
  • Ball joints - are located at the ends of the steering rods and allow for free torsional movements while ensuring a stable connection between the rods and the steering knuckles.

Steering rod functions:

  • Transmitting steering movement - tie rods transfer movement from the steering gear to the wheels, allowing the vehicle to turn. When the driver turns the steering wheel, the steering gear moves the tie rods, which causes the steering knuckles to rotate and the wheels to turn.
  • Ensuring stability and precision - tie rods must be strong and precisely mounted to ensure stable and accurate vehicle control. Looseness or damage in the steering racks can lead to steering and safety problems.
  • Absorbing suspension movements - tie rods must be flexible enough to allow suspension movements. Ball joints and other flexible components allow the steering racks to adjust to suspension movements when driving over bumps.
