Brake shoes

Brake shoes are key components of the drum braking system used in various vehicles such as cars, motorcycles, and bicycles. Their task is to create a braking force through friction, which slows down or stops the rotation of the brake drum.

The principle of operation of brake shoes:

  • Brake Actuation: When the driver presses the brake pedal, hydraulic (or mechanical in some systems) pressure causes the brake shoes to move outwards.
  • Drum Contact: The brake shoes press against the inner surface of the brake drum, creating a friction force.
  • Vehicle Slowing: Friction between the friction linings and the drum slows down the rotation of the drum, which reduces vehicle speed.
  • Return to Home Position: When you release the brake pedal, the return springs return the shoes to their home position, separating the friction linings from the drum.

Maintenance and replacement of brake shoes:

  • Regular inspections: Check the condition of the friction linings for wear and possible damage.
  • Replacing Worn Shoes: Brake shoes should be replaced when the thickness of the friction linings approaches the minimum value recommended by the manufacturer.
  • Cleaning and lubrication: Regularly clean the brake system components and lubricate moving parts such as pins and guides.
