Brake cables

The brake cable is an important component of the braking system, especially in vehicles such as bicycles, motorcycles, agricultural machinery, and some older car models. Its main function is to transfer force from the control element (e.g. brake lever) to the braking mechanism (e.g. brake shoes, brake discs). The tie can be made of various materials, depending on the application and required strength.

The principle of operation of the brake cable:

  • Brake Lever Pressure: The operator presses the brake lever (hand or foot), which tightens the cable, moves the rod, or creates pressure in the hydraulic line.
  • Force transmission: The force is transmitted through the brake cable to the braking mechanism (shoes, disc, drum).
  • Braking: The braking mechanism (e.g. brake pads) presses against the brake disc or drum, creating friction and slowing the vehicle.
  • Return to Home Position: When the brake lever is released, the return springs or hydraulic mechanism return the brake components to their home position, allowing the vehicle to move freely.
