What is a centrifugal friction clutch and how does it work?

A centrifugal clutch is a type of friction clutch that connects the power transmission shafts (drive shaft> output shaft). The centrifugal clutch operates automatically, using the centrifugal force which acts radially on the friction elements of the clutch connected by springs. The higher the rotational speed of the drive shaft, the greater the force exerted on the friction elements, which spread until they begin to rub against the housing, the appropriate force and friction causes both of these elements to start to rotate simultaneously. The force generated in this way must be large enough so that the friction elements and the pulley do not rotate at different speeds during operation of the device.

Where are ATV centrifugal friction clutches used?

The ATV one- way friction clutch has several advantages, including free warming up of the engine before starting work, or operator safety, because with a decrease in the rotational speed of the shaft, the elements are fed with less centrifugal force and the springs pull them back to their original position, which allows the drive to be disengaged, the working shaft stops working. Clutches of this type are widely used in industry in construction machines, in garden and agricultural mowers, or in vehicles, e.g. quads and scooters.

The most common failure of the ATV clutch is the wear of the friction linings or breaking the spring, and the first signs of a worn clutch are the failure of the driven shaft or the machine's incomplete power, often slow starting and the inability to reach full power or speed of the vehicle.
