The crown wheel with the pinion is a part of the differential mechanism responsible for transferring the drive from the engine drive shafts to the road wheels. In addition to transferring the drive, the shaft + crown wheel drive unit increases the torque transmitted by the longitudinal shaft to the transverse shaft while changing the direction of rotation.
