Piston rings seal the space between the walls of the piston and the walls of the cylinder. During the combustion of the fuel mixture in the engine chamber, chemical energy is exchanged for mechanical energy, which is why we care about the tightness of these two elements. The second important role played by piston rings in the engine is to scrape off excess oil from the cylinder walls during the movement of the piston, thus ensuring proper lubrication. There are three basic types of rings in internal combustion engines:
