Piston rings Yanmar STD 85 mm (2.50+2.50+2.50+4.00) / 22708501-00
Piston rings seal the space between the walls of the piston and the walls of the cylinder. During the combustion of the fuel mixture in the engine chamber, chemical energy is exchanged for mechanical energy, which is why we care about the tightness of these two elements. The second important role played by piston rings in the engine is to scrape off excess oil from the cylinder walls during the movement of the piston, thus ensuring proper lubrication. There are three basic types of rings in internal combustion engines:
- sealing rings,
- scraper rings,
- compression and scraper rings.
When replacing the rings, pay special attention to the order in which they are placed on the piston. Install the rings in the correct order, with the scraper ring first, the sealing ring second, and the oil ring third.

First signs of piston ring wear:
- higher fuel consumption,
- engine oil loss,
- power drop,
- black smoke from the exhaust pipe of a hot engine,
- uneven engine operation at idle speed,
- unnatural easily audible sound from the engine area,
- power drop,
- problems starting the engine,
these are signals that it's time to replace the rings. All these symptoms should be consulted with a professional service center in order to properly diagnose and check the engine for the need to replace the rings or overhaul the engine.
