What is a PTO and how does a PTO work?

The power transmission shaft is the drive shaft. The rotary motion from the tractor to the connected machine is designed to work at an angle to the tractor. The power transmission shaft consists of 2 crosses, 2 pairs of forks and a telescopic triangular tube. A PTO shaft is the common name for three types of shaft:

  • tractor power take-off shaft (PTO),
  • power transmission shaft, e.g. tubular or telescopic,
  • power take-off shaft in the machine (WPM).

How to choose the right PTO shaft?

The universal articulated telescopic shaft comes in several types and is divided according to the length and value of the transmitted torque. The minimum value of the torque is a parameter that is the main parameter that we must follow when choosing a shaft. Nominal Nm is the torque transmission value that decreases as the shaft extends beyond the manufacturer's specified value. The next step when buying a roller is choosing the right length. To select the right shaft, measure the distance from the tractor PTO to the machine's PTO shaft and then measure the PTO shaft from the center to the center of the joints.

The tear-off wedge of the PTO shaft is an element that protects the machine and the shaft itself from damage while the tractor is working with the machine. The tear-off wedge is an additional element, an extension of the multi-wedge, which is attached with a screw. When the machine locks up, high rotational force breaks the mounting bolt. The shaft continues to rotate but no longer transmits torque to the machine. Repair of a shear wedge consists in installing a new bolt.
