Steering column shafts

The steering column is a key element of a vehicle's steering system. It is a mechanical system that connects the steering wheel to the steering mechanism (steering gear) and transmits the rotational movement of the steering wheel to the wheels, enabling the driver to control the vehicle. The steering column plays an important role in ensuring precise and safe steering of the vehicle.

Main components of the steering column:

  • Steering shaft - this is the central element of the column that transmits rotational motion from the steering wheel to the steering gear.
  • Column Housing - This is the outer part of the steering column that protects the internal components and often contains the adjustment mechanisms.
  • Universal joints - these are flexible joints that allow rotational motion to be transmitted even when the steering shaft is not perfectly straight, which is necessary in vehicles with adjustable steering wheel height and angle.

Steering Column Features:

  • Transmitting steering movement - the main function of the steering column is to transmit the rotational movement of the steering wheel to the steering mechanism, which then converts this movement into movement of the vehicle's wheels.
  • Comfort adjustment - steering columns often allow you to adjust the steering wheel position (height, distance from the driver), which increases driving comfort and allows you to adjust the setting to the driver's individual needs.
  • Safety - Steering columns are designed with safety in mind. In the event of a collision, some struts have ratchet mechanisms or crumple zones to reduce the risk of injury to the driver.
  • Operation of auxiliary functions - switches on the steering column allow the driver to easily access important vehicle functions without taking their hands off the steering wheel.
