A V-belt is a component used to transmit power from an engine or transmission to an accessory or machine. V-belts are most often used to drive an alternator, coolant pump, or compressor, and in agriculture, belts are used in agricultural machinery and implements operating at high speeds. V-belts are the most frequently worn-out parts of agricultural machinery due to their material and damage resulting from overloading during operation. A worn V-belt should be replaced as soon as possible to prevent accidents or damage to the machine. An incorrectly installed V-belt or incorrectly adjusted tensioner, or too little or too much V-belt tension, can cause premature wear. The first signs of V-belt wear (e.g., belt stretching) include a loss of machine power or unusual noise during operation.
