The valve guide is a component whose primary function is to guide the valve stem and dissipate some of the heat from the valve head to the cylinder head. The valve guide maintains the valve in the correct position during engine operation and provides sufficient pressure for proper valve operation. Proper valve position relative to the valve seat and the highest possible accuracy are desirable, but it's also important to remember that too little clearance can cause valve seizure.

The first signs of valve guide wear include increased fuel or oil consumption, reduced engine power, or rough engine operation. Damaged guides should be replaced as soon as possible, as damaged guides can lead to valvetrain damage.
