The valve guide is an element whose main task is to guide the valve stem and remove some of the heat from the valve head to the cylinder head. The valve guide holds the valve in the correct position during engine operation and provides the appropriate pressure for the correct operation of the valves. The correct position of the valve relative to the valve seat and the greatest possible accuracy of this fit are desirable, but it should also be remembered that too small a clearance can cause the valve to seize.

The first signs of valve guide wear are increased fuel or oil consumption, reduced engine power or uneven engine operation. Damaged guides should be replaced with new ones as soon as possible, because damaged guides can damage the valve system.
