A standard V-belt is marked with two length values, Ld and Li. The length Li is the inner length, and the length Ld is the so-called pitch length; according to the ISO standard, in a very simplified way it can be called the outer length, but it is the length measured at the structurally strongest point of the belt. A V-belt is an element used to transmit drive from the engine or gearbox to an attachment or device. V-belts are most often used to drive the alternator, coolant pump or compressor, and in agriculture belts are used in devices and attachments subject to high rotational speeds. V-belts are among the most frequently worn parts of agricultural machinery, due to the material they are made of and damage caused by overloads during machine operation. A worn V-belt should be replaced with a new one as soon as possible to prevent an accident or damage to the machine. An incorrectly fitted V-belt or an incorrectly adjusted tensioner, as well as too low or too high V-belt tension, may cause faster wear. The first signs of V-belt wear (e.g. belt stretching) are a loss of machine power or an unnatural noise during operation of the device.
