The valve stem seal is a rubber gasket designed to ensure tightness between the valve and the camshaft chamber. The first signs of valve stem seal damage are loss of engine oil and increased smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe when starting the engine, while driving when increasing engine speed. A worn valve stem seal should be replaced with a new one as soon as possible.
