A gasoline engine will require a different type of filter than a diesel engine. Regardless of the fuel type, the filtering material consists of various types of filter paper based on polyester or cellulose fibers with the addition of synthetic fibers.

A dirty fuel filter restricts the free flow of fuel to the engine and can cause starting problems or cause the engine to misfire. Sometimes, a clogged fuel filter can cause a loss of engine power or lead to higher fuel consumption.
