An engine oil filter is a crucial component of the lubrication system, its main task being to remove organic and mineral contaminants from the oil circulating in the engine. A metal, screw-on oil filter is primarily designed to remove even the smallest contaminants from the oil, down to 1/50th of a millimeter in size. The filter's design is very simple and consists of a threaded metal housing with a paper insert arranged in a concertina pattern to increase the filtering surface area. Oil contamination most often arises from organic contaminants, oil breakdown during operation, fuel residue, or oxidation byproducts. Mineral contaminants include airborne contaminants and metal particles that enter the engine during operation.
