Pleuellager sind Bauteile, deren Hauptaufgabe darin besteht, die Reibung an der Verbindungsstelle von Pleuel und Kurbelwelle zu reduzieren. Bei den Lagerschalen handelt es sich um zwei trennbare, halbrunde Elemente, die im eingesetzten Zustand einen Kreis bilden. Die Lagerschalen (jedoch nicht alle Typen) verfügen zusätzlich über eine kleine Nut oder Aussparung, durch die das Schmiermittel verteilt wird. Die häufigsten Gründe für einen schnellen Verschleiß von Pleuellagern sind:
