The cylinder head gasket is a gasket installed at the junction between the cylinder head and the engine block. The connection between the block and the cylinder head must be airtight for proper engine operation. The cylinder head gasket seals the cylinders, coolant passages, and lubrication channels, and prevents the two fluids from mixing. The gasket's secondary function is thermal insulation, as part of the engine block can heat up to 2000 degrees Celsius from the combustion chambers.
