Piston rings seal the space between the piston walls and the cylinder walls. During combustion of the fuel mixture in the engine chamber, chemical energy is converted into mechanical energy, which is why the tightness of these two components matters so much. The second important role of piston rings in the engine is to scrape excess oil off the cylinder walls as the piston moves, thus ensuring proper lubrication. In internal combustion engines we distinguish three basic types of rings:

• sealing rings,
• scraper rings,
• compression-scraper rings.

When replacing the rings, pay special attention to the order in which they are arranged on the piston. The rings are fitted in the correct order: the scraper ring (No1) is fitted first, the sealing ring (No2) second, and the oil ring (No3) is fitted third.

First signs of piston ring wear:

• loss of power,
• black smoke from the exhaust pipe of a warmed-up engine,
• uneven engine running at idle,
• unnatural, easily audible noise from the engine area,
• loss of power,
• problems starting the engine,

are signs that it is time to replace the rings. All these symptoms should be consulted with a professional workshop in order to make a proper diagnosis and to check the engine for the need to replace the rings or overhaul the engine.
