An alternator is a device that converts mechanical energy into direct or alternating current, thereby supplying power to the tractor's electrical system, including the battery. The alternator generates current only while the engine is running and is driven by a V-belt. The first signs of alternator failure are a warning light that does not go out, flashes or does not light up at all - the so-called battery charge light - while the tractor's glow plugs are heating. A light coming on while the tractor is working may indicate an incorrect voltage supplied by the alternator to the battery.
