Alternator to urządzenie, które zamienia energię mechaniczną na prąd stały, przemienny dzięki czemu zasila układ elektryczny ciągnika w tym akumulator. Alternator wytwarza prąd tylko podczas pracy silnika i napędzany jest paskiem kinowym. Pierwsze oznaki uszkodzenia alternatora to nie gasnąca, migająca lub w ogóle nie świecąca się lampka kontrolna tzw.: lampka ładowania akumulatora podczas grzania świec silnika ciągnika.
