Die Glühkerze ist so im Motorblock montiert, dass sich die Heizspitze im Ansaugkrümmerraum befindet. Der schnelle Temperaturanstieg an der Zündkerzenspitze wird durch den Strom verursacht, der durch die Zündkerzen fließt, wenn der Zündschlüssel in die Zündkerzenheizposition gedreht wird. Der schnelle Temperaturanstieg an der Zündkerzenspitze erwärmt die Luft und die weiter in den Motor gesaugte erhitzte Luft erleichtert die Zündung und den Start des Motors.

Eine fehlerhafte Glühkerze ist eine häufige Ursache, die verhindert, dass der Motor startet und die Maschine erdet. Zu den ersten Anzeichen einer Fehlfunktion der Zündkerzen gehören eine erhöhte Rauchentwicklung aus der Abgasanlage beim Starten des Motors, zu starke Vibrationen kurz nach dem Starten des Motors oder ein zu lauter Motorbetrieb.
