A rubber cover , commonly known as a " dust cover ," is most often a rubber cone (or tube), tapered at one or both ends with a groove for easier mounting, such as a tourniquet. This type of cover is used not only for gear shift levers and rod ends, but is also used internally in machine systems, sealing components such as half-axles or various shafts that are not subjected to rotational speeds during operation. The main purpose of the "dust cover" is to protect the mechanical assembly from contaminants and to prevent the washout of the lubricant found in many moving parts of the tractor.
