A back-up ring is a rigid ring, usually made of plastic, that protects O-rings from damage caused by the high pressure and temperature inside a hydraulic system during operation. A back-up ring (also known as a backup ring) is a ring whose primary function is to prevent the O-ring from being forced into the gap between the sealing surfaces and to protect the seal from deformation, which can occur when the seal is subjected to high pressure and temperature. When pressure acts on the O-ring from two directions, a back-up ring is used on both sides of the O-ring.
