A shaft seal is a rubber ring (also known as a Simmerring or Simmer ring, named after its inventor), most often made of rubber or another plastic material that meets the required technical specifications. The Simmerring is used to seal rotating components of a system with a maximum internal pressure of up to 0.1 MPa that operate immersed in, most often, oil, various types of grease, and sometimes petrol or water. The most common use of shaft seals is sealing shafts and power transmission systems or machine drives and equipment. There are various types of shaft seals; the most common are cassette seals (two-piece), sealing rings with a spring around the circumference, or seals with a partly metal casing (cover). Shaft seals prevent leaks of oil or lubricant and prevent contaminants from entering the system.
