The first signs of a faulty voltage regulator are the "charging" warning light coming on, headlight bulbs shining brighter, or bulbs burning out after a short period of use. Another sign can be weakly lit indicators on the dashboard. A badly working voltage regulator can lead to overcharging of the battery, which can be recognized by the smell of sulphur around the battery, or to a loss of electrical power while driving.
