A spacer is a component whose primary function is to maintain a specific, predetermined distance between individual parts, components, or assemblies of parts in a mechanical structure. In addition to maintaining a given part in a specific position , a spacer is responsible for heat transfer (absorption) in engines and mechanical devices, as well as providing resistance to high temperatures and chemicals. Several types of spacers are available on the market, but the most common are cylindrical metal elements (sometimes hexagonal) made of a resistant metal, copper, or other metal alloy, with a milling cutter (breakaway spacers) or grooves or holes that allow for better access of the lubricant to the contact surfaces of the components.
