An O-ring is a type of circular seal available in a wide range of sizes and diameters. The primary purpose of an O-ring is to seal in areas where high pressure is not present, but also where it is subjected to high pressure. A back-up ring is a rigid ring, usually made of plastic, that protects O-rings from damage caused by the high pressure and temperature inside a hydraulic system during operation.
