A retaining ring is a rigid ring, usually made of plastic, that protects O-ring seals against damage caused by the high pressure and temperature inside the hydraulic system during operation. Back -up-ring is a ring whose main task is to prevent the O-ring from being pressed into the gap between the sealed surfaces and protects the sealant against shape changes that may occur when high pressure and temperature are applied to the seal.
