The steering column shaft is a component of the steering system, sometimes called the steering rack, and is responsible for steering the tractor. The steering column shaft transfers steering wheel movement to the tie rod ends and then to the steering wheels. The horizontal shaft interacts directly with the vertical worm shaft. The worm shaft is bolted directly to the steering wheel on one end, while its worm section on the other end drives the horizontal shaft and the subsequent steering column rods, which are connected to the front axle's steering rods.

The gear shaft is responsible for transferring motion from the vertical shaft with the worm gear to the rod ends and then to the steering wheels. This connection should be as smooth and free of play as possible.
