The locking cotter pin is an element that prevents components connected by pins or other elements placed on shafts or shaft axles, etc. from sliding off or shifting. Safety cotter pins are also used to secure nuts against self-loosening. A locking cotter pin is most often a part made of wire with a half-round cross-section. A safety cotter pin almost always has an eye, and the ends of the cotter pin are always cut on opposite sides. Cotter pins are used only in components that are not subjected to high compressive or rotational forces.
