The valve stem seal is a rubber gasket that is designed to provide a tight seal between the valve and the camshaft chamber. The engine valve seal is designed to prevent oil from getting into the cylinders from the engine.

The first signs of valve stem seal damage are loss of engine oil and increased smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe when starting the engine, while driving when increasing engine speed. A worn valve stem seal should be replaced with a new one as soon as possible.
