The synchronizer wedge , also known as the synchronizer stone , is the smallest element of the gearbox, which is responsible for smooth gear changes. Thanks to the synchronizer, gear changes are smooth, quiet and there are no grinding or jerking because the wedge momentarily equalizes the speeds of the shafts before the gears engage.
