An alternator is a device that converts mechanical energy into electric current, thus powering the electrical system of the tractor, including the battery. The alternator generates current only while the engine is running and is driven by a V-belt. The first signs of alternator damage are a warning light that does not go out, flashes or does not light up at all - the so-called battery charging light - while the glow plugs of the tractor engine are heating. On the other hand, the light coming on while the tractor is working may indicate an incorrect voltage supplied by the alternator to the battery.
