What is a thermostat in a tractor?

The coolant thermostat is one of the most important components of the cooling system and is responsible for controlling and regulating the temperature of the coolant. The thermostat is a device that responds to elevated temperature, and its correct operation makes it possible to maintain the right temperature needed for the most efficient engine operation. When the coolant temperature rises to a certain level, the thermostat "opens" under the influence of heat, letting the coolant flow into the second circuit (the radiator), which allows the coolant to be cooled effectively and, in turn, the engine.

First signs of a faulty thermostat?

Engine overheating or a very long warm-up of the engine to the proper operating temperature are the most visible symptoms of thermostat damage. A thermostat failure in the closed position causes engine overheating and is very dangerous for the engine, so when the coolant temperature warning light comes on, you should stop work as soon as possible and switch off the engine. A less dangerous situation is when the thermostat fails in the open position, because the coolant circulating in the large circuit causes the engine to run too cool; this failure is less dangerous for the engine, but in the longer term it also has an adverse effect and is harmful to the engine.
