The exhaust manifold gasket is designed to seal the space between the engine head and the manifold discharging exhaust gases from the cylinders. The first symptoms of a damaged seal are an increased noise level, which may disappear after the engine warms up, and a greasy coating on the engine near the damaged seal, visible to the naked eye.
