A sealing ring with a circular cross-section (o-ring) is a type of seal in the shape of a circle and is available in many sizes and different diameters. A back-up ring is a rigid ring, usually made of plastic, that protects O-rings from damage caused by high pressure and temperature inside the hydraulic system during operation. A back-up ring is a ring whose main task is to prevent the O-ring from being pressed into the gap between the sealed surfaces and protects the seal from changing shape, which is possible when the seal is subjected to high pressure and temperature. In the case when the pressure acts on the O-ring from two directions, we use a back-up ring on both sides of the O-ring.
