The back- up ring is a rigid ring, mostly of plastic, that protects the O-ring seals from damage due to the high pressure and temperature inside the hydraulic system during operation. A back-up ring is a ring whose main task is to prevent the O-ring from being pressed into the gap between the sealed surfaces and protects the sealant from changing shape, which is possible when the seal is subjected to high pressure and temperature.
