What is a PTO and how does a power transmission shaft work?

A power transmission shaft is a shaft that transmits drive. It carries rotary motion from the tractor to the connected machine and is designed to operate at an angle relative to the tractor. A power transmission shaft consists of 2 universal joints, 2 pairs of yokes and a telescopic triangular tube. "PTO shaft" is the common name for three types of shaft:

• power take-off shaft on the tractor
• power transmission shaft, e.g. tubular or telescopic,
• power input shaft on the machine.

How to choose the right PTO shaft?

The telescopic universal-joint shaft comes in several types, classified by length and by the torque it transmits. The minimum torque value is the key parameter to follow when choosing a shaft. The nominal Nm value is the transmitted torque, which decreases as the shaft is extended beyond the value specified by the manufacturer. The next step when buying a shaft is choosing the right length. To select the right shaft, measure the distance from the tractor PTO to the machine's input shaft, and then measure the PTO shaft from the center of one joint to the center of the other.
