What is a PTO and how does a power take-off work?

The power take-off shaft is a shaft that transmits power. Rotational movement from the tractor to the connected machine and is designed to work at an angle to the tractor. The power take-off shaft consists of 2 crosses, 2 pairs of forks and a telescopic triangular tube. The PTO shaft is the common name for three types of shaft:

• tractor power take-off shaft (PTO)
• power transmission shaft, e.g. tubular or telescopic,
• power take-off shaft in the machine (WPM).

How to choose the right PTO shaft?

The cross-joint telescopic shaft comes in several types and is divided according to the length and the value of the transmitted torque. The minimum torque value is the parameter that is the main parameter that we must consider when choosing a shaft. The nominal Nm value is the value of the transmitted torque, which decreases with the extension of the shaft above the value specified by the manufacturer. The next step when buying a shaft is to choose the right length. To choose the right shaft, measure the distance from the tractor's PTO to the machine's PTO shaft and then measure the PTO shaft from center to center of the joints.
