An oil seal is a rubber ring (also called a Simmerring, named after its inventor), most often made of rubber or another plastic that meets the required technical specifications. A Simmerring is used to seal rotating elements of a system with a maximum internal pressure of up to 0.1 MPa that operate while immersed, most often in oil, various kinds of grease and sometimes petrol or water. The most common use of oil seals is sealing shafts and power transmission systems or machine drives and equipment. There are various types of oil seals; the most common are cassette seals (two-piece), sealing rings with a garter spring around them, and seals with a partly metal casing (cover). Oil seals prevent leaks of oil or lubricant and prevent contaminants from getting inside the system.
