The wedge, or gear lock, is a component whose primary function is to secure the gear in the correct position on the shaft. There are two types of wedge connections that utilize wedges:

  • longitudinal wedge connection (wedge for mounting gears, toothed wheels, hubs on shafts and the like),
  • transverse wedge connection (wedge for connecting shafts, rods, bushings and similar, mounting plates),

A wedge for mounting a rack or pinion is a transverse wedge that is mounted in a special groove on the shaft, hub, or gear. In addition to positioning and locking the housing components, wedges also absorb some of the load from the contact surfaces.
